Goodbye Kapono… Hello Reggie Evans…

Oh man… I’ve been outta the game for a while… Since the season ended I’ve honestly gotten depressed about my Raptors. I’ve been playing NBA 2k9 on my Xbox beating teams like L.A., Denver, Cleveland and such with my raps (online play of course) to fill the void. I’ve been hounding E. Smith’s and Doug Smith’s blogs for Raps talk… All i’ve been hearing is “Bosh-is-leaving this and Bosh-is-not-signing that”… and it kinda got a little annoying to be honest… Through my scrounging I found this news and I HAD TO blog about it… All the annoying “Raptor’s fans” out there got really really irritating… and the “Brian-Colangelo-needs-to-get-fired” talk has to stop… What it is is what it is… BRIAN COLANGELO IS A GENIUS!

I absolutely love this trade. It’s been finalized but i haven’t heard a full press release yet on it… I really hope there are no strings attached (i.e. no picks or money added on to the deal)… Why do I love this trade? Well lemme break it down for you…

Who we give up:
Jason Kapono
Since coming to the Raptors there’s been a lot of talk about the team shooting and the (at the time) reigning three point champion seemed a logical fit right? I thought so too. But what happens when the reigning 3-point champ, who was brought in as a specialist player (shooting 3’s), doesn’t shoot 3’s? Well I’ll tell you what happens, the Raptors don’t get past the first round of the play offs… Not only that, but JK seemed to turn the ball over at the worst times possible. I don’t remember how many times JK’s travelled in deciding parts of the ball game and turned the ball over… ugh… Don’t get me wrong, I like JK… He’s a good piece to have but when you’re paying 5 mil for someone that person better produce… Only three other Raptors make more than JK and you can guess who those are… and No Bargnani isn’t one of them. If the price was right maybe I’d keep JK…
He did bring a lot to the team… He definitely spread the floor, it didn’t matter if he shot the three but the potential of him shooting it was reason enough for opposing teams to not leave him to help out on defence. He also brought another Raptor’s presence to the all-star weekend which seems small but for a market like Toronto it’s almost essential. My biggest problem is not even the fact that he didn’t shoot but he was also always getting beat defensively. I can understand that, i suppose, since he’s playing the same position as the Kobe’s, VC’s and such but come on… stay in front of your man… We’re paying you 5 million for goodness sakes… There may be times that we’ll miss JK this upcoming season but I think AP, Jose and Bargnani pose as much of a threat behind the 3-point line as JK may… lets clear the wing spot for a bright young wing that can beat people off the dribble and create his own shot shall we?

Who we get?
Reggie Evans
I know what you’re thinking… Who the heck is Reggie Evans? Well if you look back at the Raps vs. Philly games this past year… you know that guy that grabbed a career-high 19 defensive rebounds on us? That guy that slowed down Bosh and Bargnani? Yea that’s him… LoL… I think the funniest part of this whole thing is that I spent quite a bit of time on the NBA.com forums this morning talking about how the Raptors don’t NEED another big but if it’s coming in the likes of a Reggie Evans (comparable to a Charles Oakley in his days in the Raps) I’m not complaining. And to think that all we’re giving up is Jason Kapono? A contract that we’ve been trying to get rid of all season? DANG! Ok, ok, ok enough… let me describe a little of what Evans’ll bring to the Raps…
The Raptors have needed toughness, grit, heart and rebounding ALL SEASON long… This problem is arguably the no. 1 reason for the lost season (the other being the weak wing spot) and the Raptors just addressed it with out losing much. This is why I’ve elevated BC to the GENIUS level. Evan’s is a hard-nosed, gritty player that is defensively minded and is a rebounding machine! Why do you think we picked up Jermaine O’Neal last summer? Well we just found a better fit… may not be a better player… but Evans is definitely a better fit! The reason for the JO failure was the fact that JO and Bosh couldn’t play together, they wanted the ball at the same part of the floor and it just didn’t work. Well Evans doesn’t demand touches and gets his energy from his defensive play. Not only that but Kapono was due to make 6 mil in the next two years (6.2 and 6.6 respectively) and Evans’ cheque comes up to 5mil (4.6 and 5.0). Financial flexibility, toughness, grit, rebounding… and he’s just flat out scary… Reggie Evans is a perfect fit for the soft Raps.

This trade is exactly what I was waiting for. I sit at work day in and day out dreaming of what the Raptors may end up being like come training camp season, or even come June 25th (the NBA Draft), dreaming of what BC is doing right now to make the team better. The news of Triano’s staff, Ivaroni and English and a potential Alvin Williams wasn’t nearly as impacting as this trade. It’s starting to look like this year may be the year again… but lets not jump the gun and repeat the anticipation and failure of last season… *sigh*
